I am not really an Operating System expert so I can't just tell you the reason why you should use Linux OS instead of Windows. I have come to realize that there are two Operating Systems I can't do without, these are Linux and Windows. Sometimes, I want to choose one out of these two Operating Systems and I often find that there is a feature present in one which is not in the other.
I have been a Windows user all my computer life, now one would ask why Linux?. In Windows, there are things I'd want to do that are not allowed or not available and as a Windows user, you are always a prey to Linux users. Windows is a great OS for me because I do all my programming tasks on it and there are many good software development tools available for Windows, in addition, it has the largest user base, as a developer that means I have more people to run my programs as soon as they are developed.
Linux is an Open Source Operating System for everybody, but people seem to shy away from it because they believe the OS is only for people with big brains. I run Kali Linux on my PC (one I use for flexing not for work, though the OS's designed for serious work), I have found that the OS is more stable than any Windows OS I have used. Apart from being stable and a good tool for hacking, the OS is superb at multi-tasking with virtual desktop, meaning that you can be doing millions of things at once. I am sure if I do this in my 2GB RAM Windows 7 System, there would be a lot of hanging.
This OS is what computer geeks should be using on their personal Machines. Mere using it will show you many things you didn't know about computers and Operating Systems. If you are ever looking forward to inventing something very powerful, Linux is your best bet; Microsoft will not allow you tamper with Windows source code.
Did you know android was built with Linux Kernel and therefore is a distro of Linux? Learning and using Linux will not take your Windows skills away, it will in fact let you see computers for what they are. Run a distro that suites your need today as your second system.
Disclaimer: I wrote this post based on my experience in the two Operating Systems. Therefore, the thought behind this post is that of mine and nobody's.
